What's the Big Deal? Everyone Should Be Free to do What They Want Right?

Hey guys!

So I've been thinking a bit about this issue with North Carolina and the amendment that bans gay marriage (and a few other things like being able to charge for abuse for unmarried couples and things like that), and I've been wanting to write a status on Facebook that gives my opinion. However, since this is such a deep and tough issue, I didn't think a Facebook status would do my argument justice, and I'd probably get shot down pretty quickly. So in order to go more in depth, I decided a blog post may be the better way to go. Not that I am an expert in these regards, and people will still disagree with me, but that's okay. It's a blog after all.

To me, this issue goes far and beyond amendments and political policy to the very heart of human beings, and (this may come as a shock to some people), this issue IS NOT NEW. We think we're on the progressive side of this issue here in America... We're not. Ancient civilizations had this way before we did. (And they're gone btw.) Homosexuality is even addressed in some stories in the Old Testament as well as pretty blatantly spoken against and made against the law. However, there are plenty of laws (having to do with sacrifices and the priests) that are no longer followed. So what now?

To go even deeper into this issue, I think we have to go back in time to the place where it all started. The Garden of Eden. Some of you reading this don't believe in the Bible, but just bear with me. God created man and woman and saw that it was good. He balanced them perfectly, making a beautiful relationship that is the closest earthly representation of Christ and His church. This was something beautiful and perfect. We messed it up when we disobeyed Him and now even the little things we do go against God's perfection. We cannot live up to His righteousness. However, this doesn't mean that we do bad things on purpose, right? Once we are saved in Christ, why go back to the life He saved us from? Therefore, if homosexuality is wrong, why go back to it? There is a certain magic between a man and a woman. Not only is it natural (meaning we reproduce this way), it's the way God made it to be in His perfection. His perfection, with Christ's help, is what I long for.

This issue was something I greatly struggled with last semester. I know people who are gay, and some of my residents live this lifestyle, and they appeared to really love each other. So why was it so wrong? Wasn't love a good thing? Was I just being stubborn? A close friend of mine lives this lifestyle, and I consider her like a little sister. However, I've seen sides to the homosexual community that has nothing to do with the straight side, and it's by no means perfect and has a lot of inner strife. But going back to God, I see how He created this kind of relationship to be, and I realized that a man and woman was special and it is offensive to God that we are so blatantly ignoring Him. By no means do I hate people who live a homosexual lifestyle (hatred is not given by God), and I do truly love them. I realize this goes beyond simply put laws and goes to the very depths of our hearts. If you were to leave the homosexual lifestyle, it wouldn't be easy, but that goes for every sin, not just homosexuality. I believe we should be loving, but that doesn't mean we accept their sins. Kind of goes along with the saying, "Love the Sinner hate the sin." Considering what God did for me and the sacrifice He gave for me, I cannot help but want to live for Him and please Him. He is AMAZING!!! So therefore, shouldn't we try to be reaching out to those in this lifestyle and not bashing them with our Bibles? We're just as guilty as they are, we just sin differently. We need to realize that this sin is harming them just as our sins harm us (which is why God says don't do it.)

Now there's also the law issue. People may agree with me about homosexuality being wrong,  but they believe the government should be left out of these issues and people should chose for themselves. Issues of morality should be left out of government and be left up to the people. At first this seems like a pretty good argument. However, if this was the case, we shouldn't have laws at all. Something I've realized is that ALL laws are based off of morality. Stealing, murder, speeding, embezzlement, etc. These all harm others, but they're also based off the fact that we see them as wrong. So why are so many people pointing fingers at the Christians who are voting against gay marriage when they are trying to do the same thing to make gay marriage right? They too are voting off of what they believe to be right. I call a double standard here. So no, I don't mind voting against gay marriage as long as we are doing something to show the love of God to those in this lifestyle.

As you can see, my explanation is kind of long, but I hope it is understandable. I also don't mind if you comment and you have your own opinion. However, I don't mean to start an argument, and I hope that if you do comment, you will keep this in mind.

For those of you who agree with me, we need to PRAY and PRAY and PRAY. We need to get the Creator of the Universe in on this if anything is going to change. Let's show the love of God, my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ! But let's be honest too. (Which is also love.)

Peace to you all,

Keri Lynn
